red maple as bonsai

Susan asked about this species (Acer rubrum). From my limited reading and
experience, the answer is maybe. I have been fighting with one for 15 years. I
understand the subspecies that is native to Florida is a little better. You can
find one or two pictures on the Web of specimens from Canada.
Growth is coarse. It has to be fairly large to be a successful bonsai. It is
very resilient and will take abuse. It responds to thread grafting. Leaf
reduction will be a struggle. You might get something interesting eventually.

Thanks for the information Iris-between you and Jim these guys won't be in
my "real bonsai" category..... just get to be trees :). Although they will
be in pots so technically bonsai LOL. I like the little bonsai trees
personally, so to struggle with something that doesn't want to be little
seems futile :). My bonsai training will be put to use, I want to get a
sturdier branch structure on these guys-they have a few low sprouts so must
backbud and a height reduction is in order eventually to let the side
branches get stronger.... :)
