My garden has suffered from me being away at inopportune times this summer. I missed all the rainstorms in late June and when I returned the yard was overgrown with weeds. That was enough to knock back the flowers a bit. They're doing better now, but not as good as they could be. Just finishing their blooms are astilbe, phlox, shasta daisies, pastel yarrow (which has taken to being just plain light pink), paprika yarrow, heliotrope. In full bloom are cerise yarrow, hostas, lamium, and all the annuals (only petunias and geranium this year). I've already chopped down the oriental poppy, maltese cross, and painted daisies. Approaching their second bloom are dianthus and cranesbill.
I've also discovered that cheap trellis' are not worth the money, having to prop up my morning glory trellis almost every day. Next year it will be a more permanent structure.
An odd thing with my ostrich fern. I'm not a fern expert, usually can't grow them in this dryness, but I found a spot in the yard it likes. This year, one frond curled all up and looked like it was going to die off. Each lobe of the frond was curled. Yesterday I went out and had a look at it and there are individual plants coming off of these lobes....almost like the spores on the underside have sprouted. HAs anyone else had this happen? We've also noticed here at work this year, that some brome grass seed heads have sprouted while still on the grass..i.e. small plantlets coming off the top of the seadhead. Strange year.

Brenda,
Being farther behind than even usual with email, I don't know if you ever
got a reply to this. It's a new phenomenon to me, too. Sounds like you
ought to post this to Fernet - the fern lover's list - where there are many
experts on ferns, and see what they say. If you need instructions for
that list, let me know.
I'd love to know the answer, too.

Thanks Marg, I'll need those instructions because I've never heard of fernet - and you're right, I didn't get any replies on the fern question.

Brenda,
To subscribe to Fernet, send email to this address:
macjordomo@koning.ecsu.ctstateu.edu
Don't put anything in the subject line.
In the body of the message, type:
subscribe fernet first_name last_name
Where, of course, you put your first and last names in place of the words
first name, last name.
Don't put anything else or use a SIG block.
This used to be Pteridonet and the original list owner had to give it up,
so it was continued as fernet. It is not a very active list, but has
probably the most knowledgeable fern people on the net on it. No chat, but
good information about ferns. If yours is a regular phenomenon, someone
will likely know about it. I'll be interested to read the replies :-)
Cheers,
