I have some daffodils behaving very oddly this year. Along the walkway to
my front door, the previous owners planted Ice Follies daffodils. I'm not
real fond of straight lines of flowers, keep threatening to make them more
naturalized looking, but I've been lazy and left them there for six years.
Every year they pop out of the ground in January, grow, and bloom in
mid-March. Except this year, the ones nearest the house on both sides of
the sidewalk came up a good month before the others. You can see an orderly
progression in size all down the walk, with the earliest set blooming and
the latest barely out of the ground.
I can only attribute this to the total lack of winter we had. It barely
broke freezing all year. So I figure the ones farthest away got just enough
chilling to keep them on a normal schedule and the effect lessened the
closer to the house it got. I hope that's what it is because it looks
pretty darn goofy, and if they're going to do that regularly I really will
redistribute them into clumps!

I think your theory sounds right. I notice that the minor bulbs closest =
to the house are further ahead in terms of growth than those further from =
the house. Makes sense to me.
