I have two hanging baskets filled with what I was refering to as Christmas
Cactus. I think mine *thinks* it's a Halloween Cactus.:-) They have been
blooming since then.
One is white with red edge blooms, red center. The other is mostly red tinged
with white. Very beautiful full baskets of solid bloom that are starting to
droop a little now that Thanksgiving is coming!!.
I would like very much to have other colors of this plant. I read in the
Thompson &Morgan catalog that there is a collection offered on page 57 of
seed.
Has anyone ordered these and grown them from seed?
Also see in Burgess Seed&Plant Catalog these Cactus are offered as plants
that can be ordered. Doubt they could be ordered this time of the year. Does
anyone know?
Also would anyone know if Burgess seed Co. has a Web site?
Anyone care to offer any information on these??
Thanks,
Marie

Marie,
I have a small bright fuschia Christmas Cactus that I originally bought
blooming right before X-mas a few years ago. The next two years it was a
Thanksgiving cactus, and this year it started blooming after Halloween
and is finishing up now. I think the amount of light it gets in the
house must have altered the blooming time, or the nursery altered its
cycle originally to have them for sale at X-mas.
I also have a orange/yellow/white multi-flowering Christmas cactus
hanging in the skylight that was originally a X-mas blooming cactus.
Last year it bloomed the entire month of December, then some more of the
white flowers bloomed at Easter. This year it's starting to bloom right
now at Thanksgiving. Who knows what's going on--except that they do keep
blooming every year and look lovely.
I have never grown them from seed, but I have started some for friends
from little segments. They're so easy to root--just stick them in
potting mix. If you have any friends nearby who have different colors
than you, ask them for some segments after it's done blooming. If it
were spring, I'd say we could try mailing each other pieces wrapped in
wet paper towels inside plastic sandwich bags and see what happens, but
this time of year they'd probably freeze.

Try Rainbow Gardens. They'll send you a printed catalog for a small fee.
It'll have you drooling! Or check their website. I've ordered from them
several times with good results, and gotten lots of helpful cultural
information via email.
If you're inclined, drop me a line backchannel. I'd love to chat with
another X-mas cactus afficianado.
