Just the same as you would in silica jell except it takes a while longer.
I don't use it any more as I got a big (read huge) container of silica
jell at a yard sale and it is much quicker.(less than a minute if you
nuke them or 3 days for roses)

But when I used Borax, I had a large plastic container that I would
bury the flowers in. If I remember it took around a week and you
could keep reusing the the borax.

Hope that helps

For a while Jill I was keeping the silica jell in the little packets that =
you got with camera stuff, etc. but I think I threw them out.

If you do use the silica jell, how do you use it by nuking it. I nuke =
various herbs, etc. but have never done it with silica jell.

How large a plastic container do you use with Borax and how much Borax do =
you use?? Can you nuke the Borax??

I dried peonies last year - upside down - but they lost lots of their =
colour. I have 30 buds in the fridge right now (as per Kay's instructions =
for my friend's son's wedding on July 11). She had decided she wasn't =
going to do it. I cut 15 anyway and then she decided yes, she'd like me =
to do it. Her son came by last weekend and said he was glad that I had =
done 15 so I did another 15.

BTW, lots of people have commented on this crazy weather. Would you =
belive my rudebeckia have large buds. They don't usually flower until =
August :-(. I think my garden is going to look very 'green' this summer. =
I found a large spot (2' by 2') without anything in it so will put some =
sunflower seeds in there this weekend. Maybe late but at least something =
will be.

Another BTW, I bought a meadowsweet ($8.00). Its blooming, but it was =
supposed to be a deep rose and its almost white. Really disappointing. =
Otherperennials (large) have started blooming too and they weren't =
supposed to bloom for another month or so.

I have to go out tomorrow so think I'm going to look for some tall annual =
fillers. Can anyone think of any. I've already used up (and gave away =
some) cleome and malvas.

Penny, who had the sprinkler on again tonight while it was coming down =
ever so lightly.

If you do use the silica jell, how do you use it by nuking it. I nuke various
herbs, etc. but have never done it with silica jell.

You just bury your flowers in the silica and nuke at about 50%
power for 30 sec or less. If the flower has really thick petal you
have to be careful or the petals will "cook". The moisture inside the
petal expands and you have this really big bubble on your rose
petal. I usually nuke one or two of something just to see how the
colour holds up, then bury what I want preserved and let them "dry"
over 2 or 3 days. Rose buds take about 45 sec or 3 days.

> How large a plastic container do you use with Borax and how much
Borax do you use?? Can you nuke the Borax??

I used an old Tupperware container. That summer my son and I
were drying lots of flowers because that was our Xmas making
project. I had the entire box ( it is a small box as detergent goes) in
the container most of the time. We would dig out our flowers and
"spoon" the borax back into the box to be poured over the next set of
flowers. I never nuked it. . .at that time I don't think I knew you
could do that.

I never tried peonies. . . .don't know what would happen with their
colour. I have a deep red and a light pink still in flower so I will give
them a test tomorrow..

This is a very different "spring" or early summer. I have peonies still
out, roses that are almost done, my jackimani clematis has been
blooming for a couple of weeks as has my etoile violette. My hostas
are in flower, astible are in bud as are 2 or my chrysanthimums.
My pink and red bee balm is out as is the pink echinacea. . the
white seem to be a bit slower. My annual poppies are done. My
delphiniums are really great this year. . .well over six feet tall and as
we have had no rain are still standing tall. (Well we did have a bit of
rain last night but it was very gentle and no wind. . .not really
enough. .our farmers are praying for rain)

It will be interesting to see what I have in a month or so

Thanks for the instructions Jill. Still haven't located the Borax yet tho =
I was in the pharmacy section at Walmart on Saturday and asked but they =
didn't have any. Checked out a different grocery store too. Will check =
at the hardware store.

Very weird here too re plants blooming and my neighbour and I were =
commenting that some of the disease/insect problems we would normally see =
later in the season have already started.

We had a few minutes of rain early Sat. evening. The kind that comes down =
in sheets but doesn't last long. The delphs were fine but the peonies, or =
what's left of them, were almost lying on the ground even tho I had tied =
and staked them. They didn't even get the rain across the harbour.

I'll keep the instructions and hopefully get to try it if I can locate the =
Borax. Thanks again Jill.

Penny, I can pick up a box of borax for you if you
would like and send it if you can't find it. It
would be a heavy box I think, so don't know what
postage would run. Let me know. I know I have needed
things and listers have offered to assist in this way.
Maybe I can do the same for you. - Serita

Thanks for the offer Serita. Not sure where you live but would imagine =
postage would be pricey. I'll keep looking. Sure to come across it =
sooner or later. Asked a woman at work just now and she knows what I'm =
talking about too and suggested maybe a hardware store. Was in one twice =
on Saturday and each time I forgot to look, along with forgetting =
something else too there.

Hi Penny, just caught this email as I was downloading. I get my Borax at
the IGA stores...or Bulk barn at Bayers road sometimes. Since they
revised the stores and renamed them I cannot remember what they would be
called now in the city.
Look for it with the washing supplies usually. That is where it is here.

We haven't even had that shower you were talking about. Fog is in now
but it is almost a dry one. Hope some rain comes today; we are getting
very desperate here. The other day a boomer went through and it rained
to within 100' of our property a sprinkle anyway but nary a drop here.
Husband Steve is just praying with every rumble let me tell you. I think
he had enough fire fighting on the woods Harbour fire. Even the
adrenaline pumping can't get them excited.
Have a good weekend ,Marg

Thanks Margaret. I did check out IGA and Sobeys and couldn't find it in =
either store in the cleaning section. Will check out a couple of hardware =
stores and Superstore and Bulk Barn (same name that I know of) in =
Dartmouth.

Sorry to hear you didn't get any rain. Don't think Dale got any either or =
just a couple of drops. Not sure about Tamia. It came down hard last =
night - curious to see just how much we received.

Penny in Halifax, N.S. praying for rain for all of you in need.

Hey, Penny! Thanks! Rained last night and part of today - heavy during
the night, and nice fat drops and serious drizzle off and on all morning.
When I came home from work tonight it was like breathing bath water, but
who's complaining?! Keep up the good work.

In gratitude, I have some borax for you. Just tell me where to send it!
