After reading about Marge's great garden soil, improved by dumping LOTS of
used potting soil in the beds at the end of the season, Debbie asked:
> Anyone else have good luck with dumping potting soil like this?? I think
> Marge also works on her potting soil mix a lot more than I do...
I recycle most of my potting soil. At the end of the season, I withhold
water for a while to let the soil dry out some. I pull the plants
out
by their roots, and dump them in the compost pile. Then I put the potting
soil into big pots or buckets and store it until spring. I add about 50%
new potting soil fresh from the bag to the mix when it's time to re-use
it. I hate to throw that
good stuff out. I used the recycled soil for tough annuals, and
wouldn't hold over soil from any pot that had problems the previous
season. A plant that's known to be tempermental or fussy gets fresh "new"
soil. But I don't like to throw good soil out.
When I have the odd-ball plant to throw out, sure, I toss it in a bed or
low spot.

Kathy - I do likewise but every few years I throw the soil out - usually =
in the garden. Last fall I threw it in a pile next to a large pile of =
soil (awaiting use in a bed I hope to enlarge). I planned on using this =
potting soil in the spring in areas where I need it. Its not in the right =
location for another flower bed.
BTW, I dump the soil into doubled up large garbage bags which go into the =
shed under the upper deck.
