A couple months (or so) ago, Sunset magazine had plans for a
nifty bench designed with a latticework trellis on the back side.
Very nice looking piece. If you live anywhere in the west then your
public library should have a copy.

Most of the commercial potting benches aren't worth having, imho. I
prefer a bench at standup/barstool height, with kneespace underneath and a
4" or so "bangboard" around three sides of a top that's about 3x4 ft.
The top should be something that's fairly water and cut resistant, at
least for me (I've been known to divide big plants with a machete). Put a
shallow box on the back to hold labels, sharpie, brush and dustpan,
trowel, dibble, pruners, etc. Don't put slats or holes in the top unless
you like sweeping the floor more than I do.

The big top will hold most of the plants I'm likely to grow, give you
a good spot for custom mixing potting soil, and allow you to have 3-4
flats of seedlings out at once.

Construction: sturdy! Think 2x4 or 4x4 legs, carriage bolts through
joints, good sway bracing.

Take a look at http://southern-living.com/market/projects/bench.html ,
then, for me, drop the top shelf (things would just fall down when
I get out the machete and wallop a rootball), and set the center
of the lower shelf back about halfway so you can get your feet
under it for prolonged potting sessions.

Since I don't do nicely rabbited joints like they do, I just bolt
everything together with carriage bolts.

If you've got a sturdy wall you can put the bench against permanently,
mount a ledger board to the wall (make sure you're going into studs!) and
attach the top to that, then put a couple of legs under the front. then
add the lip around both sides and the back for a soil-catcher.

Rebecca's Garden Magazine also had a plan for a potting bench. I have a copy of a
plan I found in a magazine, complete with a metal bowl converted to a sink with a
hose hook-up. I could scan it and send it. E-mail me if you'd like.

I would love to be able to see the plans! Sounds interesting. I've got a
bench with a nice big "hole" on one side that I can cover either with a
grate or insert a potting basin. It's really handy. I like being able to
clean off the surface simply by pushing everything down the hole and into a
soil box so I can re-use, etc.

Liz,
I live in Mississippi, would you happen to have a copy you could scan?
Thanks.

Lee Valley Garden Tools has an inexpensive cedar one to
assemble and some table top trays that work, too.

Thanks! This is a nice potting bench design.

Liz, get Ray to build it and then use it to pot up that Abraham Darby rose
that dreams are made of.....

This is probably the same thing -- here's a link to instructions on the Rebecca's
Garden web site: http://www.rebeccasgarden.com:80/howto/items/98pott01.html

Tracie...

I built one from plans found on Rebecca's Garden Web site.

Here's the URL. Good luck!

I just use the same workbench I use for woodworking projects. It has no
lip, but other than that it's not bad. I wouldn't suggest anyone use
someone else's (their DH's?) workbench for that without prior consent,
though! Luckily I'm the DH and the gardener, so I can muddy it up all I want.

Now that I think of it, I could take a piece of some sort of
water-resistant board and attach a lip on three sides, and just set it on
the workbench when I wanted it. Hmm.

Completely unrelated, twice this week I've seen really big b&b trees on
trailers on the interstate. The rootballs must be 6 or 8 feet across!
That's got to be an expensive way to landscape.

Just a note....the average potting bench is designed for a person of "average"
or less height. So if you are taller than about 5' 6", you may want to consider
making your potting bench taller.
I am 5' 10" and most work surfaces are way too low and I end up with a back
ache after awhile. For my "potting bench", I bought a set of the extra sturdy,
plastic shelves from Home Depot...these babies are strong. They do have slatted
shelves, but since mine is outside that isn't a problem. I added an "underbed"
plastic container to the top to do the actual potting. Using three shelves
brought it up to a very comfortable height for me to work.

I bought a very nice one that I love. It has good sized wheels on one end of it and is
made of hard rubber plastic which I especially like because it can just be hosed off.
I can roll it around in the garden to do planting and then roll it back into the garage or
on the back patio.

It also has an additional upper shelf area with an area for holding small tools, and a coffee
cup or glass of water. Also lots of area on the bottom shelves for storage of potting soil,
etc. I love it!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention. I paid $115 for it at Charley's Greenhouse and
bought it through their catalog. It was very easy to put together. They are on-line at

Hi Tammy....

I was thinking of making one of those benches for my wife. If it's not too
much trouble, would you scan it and email it to me? Or, if there's a link
on the 'Net, you could send that.

I use a Mac computer, so if you could scan it in bitmap format, I'd greatly
appreciate it.

Thanks a bunch.

I'll look around and see if I still have it around. No scanner here but
I'll mail it to you if I can find it.
