DANGEROUS ANIMAL TRIVIA

In 1994 the National Wildlife magazine ran an article about perplexing
animal questions. One of the questions makes a rather interesting trivia
question, albeit not exactly gardening.

The question is:

According to the National Wildlife Federation, which of the following
creatures, pose the greatest danger to humans?

A. Ticks
B. Spiders
C. Snakes
D. Flies & mosquitoes
E. Rats & mice
F. Bees, wasps, & hornets

Well, .... as a lyme disease victim, I say it's A....the stinkin' ticks!

Barbara Watkins on fri 24 apr 98

Ticks, Ticks, Ticks I say! I know it's the ticks!

I go for E: Rats and mice, since they carry A: ticks. Of course it could be
A by itself, too.... 8-)

As a resident of a city whose population was so reduced due to malaria
causualties that it almost lost its charter (in 1879), I'd wager it's those
lil' buzzing bloodsuckers, mosquitos.
And they STILL haven't come up with a way to get rid of 'em!

JOANNE LYONS on fri 24 apr 98

I'm guessing ticks 'cause they're so plentiful and they can pop up anywhere
with their lyme disease.
We should have a bumper crop this year.

> A. Ticks

These aren't common enough and are seasonal, even with the Lyme's disease problems, to be of concern.

> B. Spiders
> C. Snakes

Though common, only a few species in the majority of the world are poisonous and even some of the poisonous ones aren't life threatening.

> D. Flies & mosquitoes

So far, mosquitoes are one of the biggest carriers of disease, but only in tropical areas. Most flies are a pest, only some are of health concerns.

> E. Rats & mice

Great carriers of disease. Rats carry many diseases the world through, and mice in many areas carry hanta virus. The diseases that rats carry are devastating to humans and many are fatal.

> F. Bees, wasps, & hornets

Not a large problem unless you have allergic reactions to the sting.

My vote is for E. Rats and mice.

I'll say my first chice is rats and mice because of the disease carrying
capacities up including that hantavirus from deer mice. But I'm strongly
drawn to say bees wasps and hornets due to allergies.

This is a great question, though! Thanks for sharing it.

Think I'll vote for E. rats and mice (the wild type).

I vote for rats and mice - the hanavirus is scary! Anyone ever read Rats.
Lice, and History by Zinnzer (sp?). It is a fascinating book by the author
of a microbiology text, but written in terms we regular folks can
understand!

My answer is D.

Flies and mosquitoes carry quite a few diseases. Malaria is at the top
of the list.

My answer is E. After see what the National geographic said about
them. Primestar had a picture of a rat coming up out of a toilet
saying rats could hold their breath for up to 3 minutes. They
will be doing a program on rats soon. They also said that New
York was wanting to spend 8 million dollars on getting rid of
them.

I remember reading this article and cannot for the world remember the answer.

I will hazard a guess of A. Ticks

I'd say Ticks as well...I saw an article that said that when the
Passage Pigeon went extinct, mouse populations went up, and therefore
the tick population went up. Hence more mouse transmited diseases, as
well as Tick related...ie.Lime.

Sort of a lesson in biodiversity.
