angels' trumpets/brugmansia

Hi Penny. I overwinter them indoors. That's why I don't think they're too
salt-sensitive -- they've pretty much been in the same soil for three years.
They do get leached, though. Nice thing about overwintering them in big
pots is that the big rootball gets them off to a fast start. I've got
blossoms on the species Brug (they are double whites) and the versicolor
(pinkish). BTW I've never gotten seeds from the Brugmansia. The datura did
give me big prickly seedpods, but I don't know if the seeds were viable -- I
just heaved them around the yard in places where they might germinate.
There is a datura that grows here as a summer annual weed, but it usually
doesn't bloom until September.

Hi Max - I thought they were all in the same family. The white Datura =
that I grew produced those big prickly seed pods and I planted them and =
they came true the next year. Have also overwintered a pot. Just put it =
in a south east window during the winter and occasionally would water it =
just to keep it alive. Put it back out in late spring and it bloomed =
quite well, considering our climate. A few reseed on their own in the =
garden and grew but then never came back the following year. I usually =
just pot them up too. Mine never get tall like you see in the books.

Do you put your pots in a sunny window and water them during the winter?=20=

Hi Penny. I have been overwintering them in a glassed-in sunporch with
windows on three sides and watering them. They usually sprout right after
I cut them back and grow slowly through January. Growth accelerates as the
days get longer. But this winter I plan to put them in a room with northern
exposure and keep them dryer. I hope this will slow the growth so that they
will take up less room and be easier to move outside.

Thanks Max for the explanation. I'd love it if I could have a large one =
to put out next year.
