Larry,
I'm not much for lawn chemicals but had so much crab grass last year that I
knew I had to do something. I used a product that is corn gluten and is
marketed by Gardens Alive under the name Wow. It worked great and I will do a
second application this fall. It's not cheap, but is safe and effective. The
only drawback I can see besides the cost is that my quite tubby beagle found
the corn gluten yummy and would lick the grass every time she went outside
until it rained and it soaked into the ground. Here's the address if you're
interested.

Yep. Mow your grass high from now on, and by next summer you will gain
better control. (High = 3 and a half inches or more)
Weed it out (by hand, there are fewer plants than it seems) about the middle
of August, and overseed your lawn with good quality grass seed. Topdress in
mid-October with weed free compost, up to 1/2 inch.
Next year keep your grass high, and you will notice less crabgrass. Studies
have shown that mowing at 3 and a half inches is equal to chemical control
of crabgrass.
Crabgrass is a warm season annual; it is a C4 grass and out grows dormant
cool season grasses, especially in hot dry summers, when there are
germination sites on the lawn, caused by spotty turf and especially by low
mowing, which is an open invitation to crabgrass.
Frank--gets crabby with crabgrass, but with high mowing it won't be there
next year---but for now be gladdened by its light green growing, another
color in nature's living rainbow kaleidoscope
Giggle,
I can see it now. I live on a road that dead ends to a wooded path and all the
neighbors with dogs walk them by my house. (Usually they make it to the woods)
This could cause quite a stir.

Liberty Hyde Bailey, a pioner horticulturist said about crab grass, " Die
and leave it" . Mostly keep it cut and pull it so it doesn't produce seeds,
This stuff seems to be really bad this year, my yard and garden beds and at
daughters in NW Indiana are infested and its a constant battle with it.

Just a shade tree or something with spring blossoms and winter interest?
There are numerous trees for this area that meet that criteria.
Believe me, Esther, it was quite a site! And an embarrassment! Imagine people
coming to visit and seeing a very tubby beagle making her way around the yard
licking the grass.

Good for you! Just say NO to chemical pesticides and herbicides!
White vinegar works, but kills it all, grass and the stuff you like.
I got one of those weed torches with the small propane tank. My
teenage son used to love channeling his pyromania into lawn care. My
big lawn problem is the wild strawberry. That stuff really takes
over. We've torched big sections of it and then over seeded. Kinda
works.

Oh, I hate crab grass! I would love to know any solution to it as well. I
know that while vinegar works on everything else I've tried, crabgrass just
laughs at it.

UGH! Well hopefully I won't be seeing in the garden for much longer, as I
have been digging out every root I find everytime I prep a new section. So
just have to keep it from crossing into it.

You double dig them up, shake the dirt out and spreed them out to dry when
dry, when dry you burn them and after that be careful where you spreed the
ashes==repeat as needed==grandpa was saying this over 90 years ago and I
just got the instructions from my mother;-))))))

My two hands are all I have and a two foot wood mulch barrier around the
outside. I will pull it thoroughly every time I see it. Seems to be the
only way.
